Rats!

Postby Big_Nige on Thu May 15, 2008 2:23 pm

Hi,

I've done a CBT, the theory test, and four riding days: two on 125s, and two on 500s for the DAS.

Did my test today, and once I got past the dreaded U-turn, I thought I would be OK. I failed for not using my mirrors enough: or at least for not making it obvious when I did :(

I've read both DSA books (see footnote), but I think it would help me if I could watch a video of good riding practices. Any suggestions?

Nigel

Sorry to hear that
Can you be more specific about the mirrors? What did your examiner say?
What feedback did you get from your training school?

My report says that I did not make sufficient observation on 3 occasions, mainly lifesavers, but a couple of mirrors as well. I can recall one of them (overtaking parked cars: I was already in the middle of the road, so it seemed pointless), but I thought I was doing this bit really well - in fact it was the only thing I was confident about :)

Apparently I also failed to stop for a pedestrian at a zebra crossing, but I have no recall of that event at all! There was a pedestrian walking along the pavement, and turned to the crossing just before I hit the zig-zags. Surely he can't mean that?

The training guy was surprised I failed on this as well. Like me, he thought it would be the U-turn - I fell off three times yesterday doing these!

No worries, there is always another time ...

Probably not much of a consolation, but guess what I saw on Thursday? A police rider doing a U-Turn in Mcr, and how did he do it? Well, right foot firmly on the ground whilst leaning the bike and paddling/scooting round, that's how! Clearly one rule for us learners and another for the powers that be!

Yep! Once you've passed your test, you just want to turn the bike round in a controlled, safe manner. If that involves having your feet on the ground- go for it! That can be a lot better that having your feet up, on some bikes. If I were doing a U-turn now and there was an examiner watching me, I might intentionally have my feet down the whole way (despite the fact that I can U-turn my bike just fine) :P
