Use of indicators

Postby ThomasTea on Mon Jun 16, 2008 5:13 pm

Hello,

I have a question regarding use of indicators. Do I need to indicate when passing a parked car or stopped bus etc? Will I get penalised in my test for using my indicators in this situation?
Thanks,
Tom

Oh all right then I'll answer it properly!

In a word NO

The use if the indicator for passing parked vehicles may be giving a confusing signal to others.

eg... are you about to turn right into a minor road? are you turning into that drive? are you passing that parked car?

Remember that everybody else on the road is an idiot and you'll do fine.

We are slim enough (even Rob! ) for the vehicle to see the parked car we are approaching. It is different if you drive a Transit van.....

Generally we would not use the indicator for these situations.

When you spot the hazard I suggest you check your mirrors and a little closer re-check your right mirror again.
You may consider the use of a lifesaver 2 seconds before you intend to pull out for the parked car, and think about some form of nearside observation before you pull back in.

The use of the lifesaver BECOMES THE INDICATION NEEDED!

Note - you must allow sufficient space for the car to open the door fully in front of you and this not to cause you concern. Some cars/vans have very wide door!!! Have a look in the car to see if anyone is sitting in it (do NOT rely on this as he might be bending down to pick up his phone), are his brake lights on? front wheel beginning to move? colder weather allows you to observe if smoke coming out from his exhaust?

I'm sure someone else along in a minute to help you further. Mind how you go. If in doubt toot toot on the horn!

Sorry for spelling but am on pain killers and its a loverly phycadelic trip to the moon. Hello Zippy

Further to this enquiry about using indicators - I have the following question...
I can fully understand that you only need to use indicators if necessary but when on test, and the examiner asks you to pull up at the side of the road (or set off) - do you use indicators even if the road is clear apart from the examiner, or do you work on the basis that the examiner knows you are pulling in so don't indicate.

Try and imagine the Examiner is not there! Indicate if you feel that someone would benifit, if not don't :D
