UK bike registrations decline slows

Powered two-wheeler registrations in the UK fell by only one per cent in June, generating sighs of temporary relief following the previous month’s plunge of more than 13 per cent and deepening economic gloom.

According to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association, a total of 14,897 machines were registered in June – only 154 behind the same month last year. For the first six months of the year, the total is now 73,245 units, a drop in the market of 2.2 per cent. By comparison, the new car market fell by a smaller margin of 1.56 per cent in the same period.

However trade cynics were quick to point out that, as June is the final month of the second quarter, a surge of dealer preregistrations undoubtedly took place for quarterly bonus claiming purposes. Without this, they say, both two and four wheeler market declines would have been much higher.

The MCIA reports that moped registrations continued their upward trend in June, as did the adventure sector – with the BMW R1200GS again the best seller in the category. The top selling bike was again the Yamaha YZF-R125. The best-selling brand was Honda, followed by Yamaha and Suzuki.
