Hi guys,
my old man told me about all your kind words on hearing about my accident. Just wanted to say thank you for all your support. Its been a tough couple of months, and I am still at times in disbelief about what has happened to me. But I am extremely thankful to still be here, someone was looking out for me that day as it could have been so much worse. The police informed me there were 3 other motorcycle incidents that same week and all were unfortunately fatal, so I have counted my lucky stars!
I suffered several severe injuries. A fractured pelvis, internal bleeding, severe bruising to private regions, causing that not to function for a while, so had to be helped with a cathater. Fractured forearm in 3 places. Ligament, tendon and knee damage to both legs, and I have unfortunately lost the function of my left foot in terms of moving up and down (known as drop foot), so questions have arose as to whether I can ever ride again. Can also never play football, or any contact sport again, which I was a regular participant of previously, which is a shame.
I was in hospital for over 3 weeks, and have had my right forearm operated on, which now has 3 metal plates and pins in place permanently. I have also had my left leg operated on to assess the damage and be cleaned up. I am at the moment unable to walk and in a wheelchair, and have been since I left hopsital. But I am in hospital again on Tuesday (23rd) for surgery on my right leg, and hopefully I will be on crutches then, and out before Christmas day. I am then in hospital again in early January for nerve surgery/nerve graft on left foot, to see if the nerve will take, however I have been advised there is a very slim chance. I will then have left leg surgery 3 months later in April.
I have unfortunately been off work since the accident, which has not been great to say the least, and sick pay is a joke, but my family and partner Louiise have been very helpful and supportive. I am hoping to be back in work in February, in between the nerve surgery and left leg surgery. So fingers crossed.
All I can say to you fellow riders is make sure you wear protective gear. It undoubtedly saved my life. I had a full leather suit on, gloves, boots and obviously a helmet. The accident was not my fault, and I was riding at 30mph on a 60 mph road, and yet I still got hit by what I can only describe as "an unobservant driver", whom I do not hold a grudge against, its just one of those things - SH*T HAPPENS!
Rob said something to me during training, which has always stuck with me "the most dangerous thing on the road, whilst on a bike sometimes is other road users", and my accident is proof of that. I am just glad I am here to tell the tale, I guess I was just very unlucky, especially on an 8 day old Yamaha R6!
Please ride safe, with appopriate gear at all times, and be aware of your surroundings at all times, it may save your life! Hopefully I will be riding again one day.
Have a Merry Christmas and New Year, and thanks for taking the time to read this, and all your support.
