Hi
My name is Lee and I would just like to say a few words about my experience when doing my CBT and Direct Access test...
Firstly I should mention that I had never touched a motor bike before in my life.
I did my CBT back in late October 2008. Nick and Rob the instructors were very patient with me. It was Nick who mainly showed me the ropes. After managing to actually look up and look ahead to where I was going
and not locking up my front wheel by pulling like hell on the front brake and not using the rear brake, it all started to sink in. Once out on the road around Congleton in the afternoon, I started to enjoy myself (apart from getting the U-turns and emergency breaking badly wrong on several occasions). I managed to pass the CBT on that day (god knows how). Nick was a great help and excellent instructor.
After my CBT, I planned to do the Direct Access test which I booked a week off work in the first week of November and had 5 full days of lessons with Rob. The first 2 days were spent on the 125cc bikes, then moving up to the 600cc. I can say that I was very nervous to say the least, but Rob again was very patient with me. He worked on all of my weaknesses (which were many!) and guided me through each day of the lessons, and built up my confidence.
On Friday the last day, I took my test in Newcastle. The weather was on my side, and so was the traffic as I managed to loose the test instructor who was in his Golf GTI car on many occasions allowing me to get on with the test and feel like I was riding for myself, and not worrying about the examiner. After arriving bank to the test centre, I was told that I had passed with only 4 minor faults (the other student passed with only 2 faults). I was so please with myself, but I know I could not have done it without Rob and Mikes help.
So, after having no experience of motorcycles to now having my full bike licence within the 3 weeks is fantastic. I am now the proud owner of a BMW F650 GS, which I can’t wait for the good weather to come and get out on the road all day.
The main things I learnt were; Enjoy it. Ride for yourself. Believe you can do it (because if I can, you can) and listen to the instructors, they have seen it all before!
So, what are you waiting for…?
Lee Holt
