Hi my name's Ian, I did my DAS with Rob in April 07, after many years biking I thought it was about time  so with a little help from Rob and a lot of persuasion from Mel I went for it and passed first time with 1 minor, was well chuffed. Cant wait to get the bike on the road (legally) and go for a ride.

Well done Ian, great rider, I learnt a few things from you.
Smooth, control and looked good.
I look forward to seeing you and Melanie with bikes at the centre soon. :D

Hi Ian,

The Cagiva was an unexpected buy as at the time I wasn't going to get a bike until I'd done my test.

It was a friend of a friend situation who was selling it and I had never heard of the bike before but the price was right so I thought it would be a good intro machine.

Work wise the bike is fully road legal but needed a new battery and stop switch for the front brake lever as the other had been cut off.

Oil change and filter next when it's had a warm up run.

I've ordered an original screen from 3 crosses motrorcycles as I'd like to get the bike back to original.Being my first Italian bike I'm begining to discover about the parts availablility and cost  (maybe why the price was right)

I suppose it will be a case of running it and either loving or hating it, only time will tell. If I love it I will consider a full strip and refurb this winter.
If I hate it I will be looking for something new.

I've always fancied a boxer twin BMW as a project but I'm prepared to wait and see what comes along.

I will get some pictures done as soon as I can.

Regards, Steve.

at least they are still making that bike althought parts are expensive
they is some service parts of japanise bikes that will fit
oil filter of a xt 500 will go on if you scrape a bit of the rubber away
they did use some bits from japan when making thier bikes as they discovered in the end that some japanise stuff was better than their own

Thanks Ian,

Certainly the electrics are from japan and the carbs a Mikuni.

Which brings me on to the next problem !

All ready to go and fetch some petrol, new battery on, started up ok then the overflow from the carb started running out. I haven't the time now but guess what I'll be doing at the weekend!

The river is not running too well at the moment

Regards, Steve.

Robert,

No expert but I've been messing with cars and bikes out of necessity so as to keep running costs down for some time.

At least with the older bikes (certainly the Cagiva) the D.I.Y. mechanic can have a go without the need for expensive test equipment.

Getting back into bikes has shown me how things have changed and there is certainly alot to learn on the new stuff.

At least this time I can enjoy this as part of the pleasure of biking.

I will be happy to pass on any info if it will help.

Regards, Steve.

Hi Ian,

Just a quick update.

Things are going from bad to worse. Having been out on a test ride the River failed to re-start when I got back home.

I thought it was the usual case of warm starting with big singles but it appears to be an electrical fault on the HT circuit.

All juice is going to earth and none to the spark plug.

I'm waitiing for a new coil to come from Italy.

Hopefully this will be the less expensive fix.

Up till then all riding is posponed. :x

Hi Ian,

Battery is OK so its not the alternator.

Just finished talking to the 3 cross guys and they recommend a new CDI unit

The coil wasn't ordered by them last time I spoke so I now have up to a 5 week wait for a new CDI to come through.

I'm begining to spend more than the bikes worth !

MOT's due in July so I may be looking for something else soon !!!

All the best, Steve.
