Correct positioning (i.e just left of centre)

Postby rebel without a clue on Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:53 am

Where should I position myself during a practical test when travelling on a straight road

I've never been 100% sure about the term left of centre.

Should I be :-

(A) Just left of centre in the lane I'm travelling in

or

(B) Just left of the lane divide markings

By the way didn't have time to do a proper diagram

i think its in the centre of the lane you are travelling in, to keep a dominant road space, because if you were close to the line, cars could pass you on the left?

Well done Val, I teach centre of the left lane (your lane) in the UK, which maximises your visibility, and control of the following traffic, providing you are meeting the speed limits.
However be flexible in this position, based on the road and hazards that are in front/behind you :D
Hope this helps :D

I thought so and that’s what I do unless I'm avoiding pot holes, man hole covers, tar bands or overtaking parked cars etc.

I only asked because I've noticed when I'm travelling at the correct speed just left of centre in my lane I'm often overtaken by cars. I'm basically treated like a cyclist (an invisible one sometimes  ).

I'd also found an article on tinternet contradicting what I've been taught

Now then Rebel...sounds like you may need to adjust your position to the right by about a foot or so.

Centre of the lane is better than just left of centre (as taught at a school in SOT) usually. Why not tru just to the right of centre and see if this helps matters for you. Worth a try.

Bit of flexability needed on your road position.

In some circumstances we may need to be next to the curb....in some circumstances we may need to be on the other side of the road....simply adjust yourself for the road and traffic conditions around you at the time.

Appear bigger on the road than you are!

Hope this helps
