According to RoSPA, Advanced Riding is:
“It is a deliberate, skilful and responsible riding technique admired by others. As an advanced rider, you are able to anticipate and control situations to reduce your accident risk. An Advanced rider is equipped with the knowledge and skill to ride safely and effectively in all conditions.
Advanced Riding is based upon the ‘System of motorcycle control’ as detailed in Motorcyle Roadcraft – The Police Riders Handbook. It is unlikely that anyone will gain a high grade without a good knowledge of the current editions of The Highway Code and Motorcycle Roadcraft.”
The RoSPA advanced test is regarded as the most comprehensive and challenging available to the public. It is monitored and approved by the Driving Standards Agency.
The test lasts around 90 minutes, and is taken with a RoSPA Examiner, all of whom are serving or retired Police Officers.
The RoSPA Advanced Riding Test is unique as it is graded Bronze, Silver or Gold. A RoSPA gold is the highest civilian riding standard available and the holder will be a master of his or her art. To see more about what is expected, download our Motorcycle Test Guidelines – see http://www.roadar.org/riders/info/motcycle-test-guide-2011.pdf.
The cost of the RoSPA advanced riding test is £54, which includes 12 months membership of RoADAR – RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders. The annual subscription to RoADAR is currently £22.50.
Unlike other Advanced Driving and Riding organisations, we also demand 3 yearly re-tests, to ensure that excellent riding standards are maintained. The re-test fee is included in your yearly subscription costs.
If you are interested in Advanced Riding, whether you want to take the RoSPA test or not, send me a PM. I’m one of the few instructors in the North West to hold a RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Riding Instruction, and one of only 18 Advanced Instructors recognised by RoSPA in the whole of the north of England (see http://www.roadar.org/groups/info/approved-motorcycle-instructors-1012.pdf). I would be delighted to help you develop your riding towards the ultimate in riding qualifications – a RoSPA Gold!21/11/2012 at 7:41 PM #10432
Interesting stuff Paul, do you sell the books for the preperation or can you suggest where to buy?21/11/2012 at 8:10 PM #10433
I’m trying to get hold of a job lot of Roadcraft and will be offering them free to anyone booking an advanced course with me, once I’ve finished putting together the materials.
Roadcraft can be bought from Amazon for £12.59 – see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorcycle-Roadcraft-Police-Handbook-Motorcycling/dp/011341143X/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1353528535&sr=1-2
The book itself is a bit dated (published in 1996) but the content is still as valid as it’s always been.
